Dai Ko Myo Explained: Why It’s a Level 3 Reiki Symbol
Every now and then, someone sends me a question so thoughtful that it stops me mid-scroll, tea halfway to my mouth, and forces me to say, “Ah. Yes. I probably should have explained that better.”
This week on Instagram, that moment arrived.
Someone reached out to ask whether they could use the symbol Dai Ko Myo without being attuned to Level 3 Reiki.
A beautiful, sincere question, and I’ll be honest, one I inadvertently invited by not being clear enough in a previous post. So consider this blog my public mea culpa, written with a small blush and a big smile.
The Question That Sparked It All
The message arrived like this (paraphrased, of course):
“Can I use Dai Ko Myo if I haven’t done Level 3?”
And my response, long, winding, heartfelt, and very Bethan, went something like this:
No, I really wouldn’t recommend using it before Level 3 because it can cause energetic confusion.
When you’re attuned, your Reiki Master actually transmits the symbol to your energetic system.
Without that? Your energy simply stays at the level you’ve already reached.(And truly, don’t quote me on this, I am not Usui and he’s regrettably unavailable for fact-checking.)
But if you feel drawn to Dai Ko Myo…
maybe it’s because you’re being called to continue your Reiki journey.
That’s exactly what happened to me. And honestly?
Doing Level 3 was one of the best decisions I ever made.I apologised for rambling. Of course, I always do, and then I sent them my warmest wishes on their path.
And after I hit send, I thought:
“Bethan, love… you really should have explained that earlier.”
So Let’s Clear This Up Properly: What Makes Dai Ko Myo ‘Level 3 Only’?
Dai Ko Myo isn’t just a pretty symbol with a nice meaning.
It is the Master Symbol — the energetic equivalent of a lighthouse beam cutting through fog.
But here’s the important part:
✔️ It doesn’t fully activate without the Level 3 attunement.
You can draw it.
You can admire it.
You can embroider it on a tote bag if that’s your thing.
But its spiritual frequency doesn’t anchor into your system until a Reiki Master attunes you to it.
That attunement isn’t symbolic, it literally opens your energetic capacity to conduct that deeper level of light.
Without this, trying to use it is a bit like typing a password into a computer you don’t have permission to access.
It won’t break anything… but it also won’t do what you think it does.
Why People Feel “Called” to It
Here’s the interesting part: People often feel drawn to Dai Ko Myo before Level 3.
And honestly? I think that’s beautiful.
Because sometimes your intuition knows long before your brain catches up. It’s not that you’re “supposed” to use it at your current level, it’s that your soul is giving you a gentle nudge:
“It’s time. Move forward. You’re ready.”
If you’re feeling that pull, don’t ignore it. Your Reiki path may be expanding.
My Tiny Public Apology
To the wonderful person who messaged me, and anyone else whose eyebrows shot up at my earlier post:
I’m sorry I wasn’t clearer about this.
Truly.
In my enthusiasm (which I assure you is abundant), I sometimes skip the important footnotes.
It is, unfortunately, one of my great talents, right next to writing needlessly long captions and never finishing my tea while it’s still hot.
If You’re Feeling the Call to Level 3…
Trust it.
Reiki Level 3 isn’t just an upgrade, it’s a deepening. A softening. A widening of light.
It doesn’t mean you have to teach. It simply means you’re opening the door to a fuller expression of your own energy. For me?
It changed everything.
If Dai Ko Myo has caught your attention lately, sparked curiosity, stirred emotion, whispered your name: maybe it’s not about the symbol at all. Maybe it’s about you. Your next step. Your readiness.
And if you ever have a question, big, small, mystical, or mildly chaotic, my inbox and heart are always open.
With warmth,
Bethan 🫶🏼🔆✨
