Let’s Talk Symbols: Cho Ku Rei — The Power Plug of Reiki

Right then. I’ve decided it’s time. Time to roll up my sleeves and start a new series here on the blog where we dive deep into the mysterious world of Reiki symbols. Yes, those swirly little doodles that look like they’ve been plucked from ancient scrolls — because, well, in a way, they have.

We’re starting, as one always should, with Cho Ku Rei. Or as I like to call it: the power symbol, the Reiki light switch, the cosmic caffeine shot… you get the idea.

So… what is Cho Ku Rei, really?

Cho Ku Rei reiki Symbol

In simple terms, Cho Ku Rei (pronounced choh koo ray) is known as the Power Symbol in Reiki. Its job? To amplify energy. Think of it like plugging your phone into a fast charger instead of leaving it to limp along on 2%. When you activate Cho Ku Rei in your practice, you’re essentially turning up the volume on the Reiki energy flow. More oomph. More juice. More zing.

Historically, it comes from the traditional Usui Reiki system. The name loosely translates to “Place the power of the universe here”, — which, let’s be honest, is a pretty fantastic job description. Whether you’re working on yourself, someone else, or even a plant that’s looking a little peaky, Cho Ku Rei is the symbol that says, “Right, let’s get things moving.”

Why We Use It (And Why You’ll Want to Use It All. The. Time.)

Cho Ku Rei is like that reliable friend who shows up early, brings snacks, and makes sure the Wi-Fi is working. We use it in Reiki for several reasons:

  • To increase power during a session (great for those days when your energy feels like it’s been on a long lunch break).

  • To clear spaces — because who doesn’t want to boot out stagnant vibes from their home or office?

  • To protect — like an energetic bouncer keeping out the bad stuff.

  • To seal in the energy after healing work, think of it as locking the door behind you so all the goodness stays put.

The Benefits of Using Cho Ku Rei

  • Boosts energy flow where it’s needed most.

  • Cleanses objects, spaces, and even food (more on that in a second).

  • Protects your energy field from picking up unwanted baggage.

  • Amplifies the effect of other Reiki symbols when used together. It’s the symbol equivalent of a good double espresso shot.

Real-Life Ways to Use Cho Ku Rei

Let’s bring this out of the esoteric and into your actual, daily life — because symbols are meant to be used, not just admired like fancy fridge magnets.

Here’s how you might call on Cho Ku Rei around the home:

  • Before cooking: Draw it over your food ingredients to infuse them with high-vibe energy (goodbye bland salad, hello cosmic nourishment).

  • When cleaning: Trace Cho Ku Rei in the air to clear lingering energy after a rowdy dinner party or a particularly “spirited” family debate.

  • On your water: Charge your drinking water with Cho Ku Rei for an energetic boost. Yes, your water can have better vibes than Karen at the yoga studio.

  • Before guests arrive: Sweep it through your living room to make sure people walk into a welcoming, refreshed space.

  • On yourself: Feeling drained? Draw Cho Ku Rei on your palm and place it over your heart or solar plexus. Instant energy top-up.

And in a Reiki practice? Oh, it’s everywhere:

  • At the start of a session, open up and amplify the energy flow.

  • Over each chakra, as you work to boost and balance.

  • At the end of a treatment, to seal the session and lock in those good vibes.

Ready to Power Up?

So there it is, my friends — the mighty Cho Ku Rei. The symbol that plugs you back into the universal grid and makes sure you’re not running on empty. Over the next few weeks, I’ll also explore the other symbols (oh yes, we’re going all in). But start here. Play with Cho Ku Rei. Use it. Feel it. Make it your go-to energetic sidekick.

And if you’re anything like me, you’ll soon find yourself Cho Ku Rei-ing your morning coffee, houseplants, and possibly your cat (with consent, of course).

Stay tuned. Next up, we’ll be unravelling the mysteries of Sei He Ki, the emotional balance maestro.

Until then, power up, and Reiki on. ✨
