Why Fire Has Always Been a Symbol of Healing (and How to Use It During Self-Reiki)

There is something about a fire that asks nothing of us.

It doesn't tell us to be more productive. It doesn't expect us to answer emails, fold the laundry or finally organise that drawer we've been avoiding since 2023. It simply burns.

Maybe that's why, for thousands of years, human beings have been drawn to fire whenever life felt uncertain.

Long before meditation apps, wellness retreats and YouTube playlists, our ancestors gathered around flames at the end of the day. They cooked together, shared stories, laughed, mourned, rested and simply watched the fire dance beneath the stars.

The fire wasn't just a source of warmth. It became a place where busy minds slowed down. And perhaps, without realising it, they were practising one of the oldest forms of mindfulness.

Why watching fire feels so calming

Have you ever noticed how easy it is to lose track of time while watching a campfire?

One minute you're thinking about tomorrow's shopping list, and the next you're mesmerised by glowing embers drifting into the night sky. Unlike our phones, televisions or social media feeds, fire doesn't compete for our attention. Its movements are slow, unpredictable and wonderfully repetitive.

The gentle crackle. The soft glow. The warmth of orange light against the darkness. Together, they create an atmosphere that naturally encourages us to pause, and many people find that while watching flames, they breathe a little slower, unclench their shoulders and let the constant chatter of the mind settle into the background.

Sometimes that's exactly what we've been craving all along.

Nature has always been one of our greatest teachers

Reiki doesn't require a forest, a beach or a mountain to work; its universal life energy is available wherever you are. Yet many Reiki practitioners intentionally surround themselves with peaceful natural environments when they practise.

Think about the places where you instinctively feel calm. It could be a woodland filled with birdsong or a beach with gentle waves rolling in. Many people find the sound of rain tapping softly against the window something which soothes them into a sweet slumber. At the same time, others love listening to the leaves moving in the breeze, or admire the quiet glow of a campfire beneath a blanket of stars.

Nature has a wonderful way of reminding us that nothing rushes. Trees don't apologise for growing slowly, and the tide doesn't panic because it went out. The seasons never compare themselves to one another, because everything unfolds in its own perfect rhythm.

Perhaps we could learn something from that.

Bringing nature into your home

Most of us can't disappear into the countryside every evening. Life has a habit of getting in the way.

There are school runs, work deadlines, dinner to cook, washing to fold and the occasional mystery sock that seems determined never to find its partner.

But we can recreate a little of that peaceful atmosphere at home. That's one of the reasons I created Natura Soundscapes so that I and others could achieve this.

By combining gentle nature sounds, calming visuals and soothing singing bowls, I hope to create a quiet space where you and I can slow down, breathe deeply and simply be.

It's not about escaping life.

It's about giving yourself permission to step out of the noise for a little while.

Simplicity is Key

We all need moments of peace to process, recuperate and rest. With just a few minutes a day, make Self-Reiki a self-care ritual.

A simple 20-minute Self-Reiki ritual

If you have twenty minutes today, I'd love to invite you to try this gentle practice.

Step 1

Find somewhere comfortable where you won't be disturbed.

You don't need a perfectly tidy room or a meditation cushion worthy of Instagram. A comfortable chair or your favourite spot on the sofa is absolutely enough.

Step 2

Dim the lights if you can.

Perhaps light a candle or simply allow the glow of the campfire video to become your focal point.

Step 3

Play the meditation below and take three slow, gentle breaths.

Let your shoulders soften. Allow your jaw to relax. There's nowhere else you need to be.

Step 4

Place your hands wherever they naturally feel drawn.

Perhaps, one hand over your heart or both hands over your abdomen. Or even across your shoulders.

There is no perfect place. Trust your intuition.

Step 5

As the fire crackles and the singing bowls gently resonate, simply allow yourself to receive.

You don't have to force anything. You don't have to visualise anything. You don't have to feel anything extraordinary.

Reiki isn't another task to complete. Sometimes the deepest healing happens when we stop trying so hard.

Step 6

When the meditation finishes, remain seated for another minute before returning to your day.

Notice how your body feels.

Notice your breathing.

Notice the quiet. Carry a little of that peace with you.

Healing doesn't always have to be complicated

We often think healing requires grand gestures—a new routine, a new supplement, another book to read, another course to take, or yet another thing to add to an already ever-growing list. But sometimes healing begins with something beautifully simple: twenty quiet minutes, the comforting crackle of a fire, the gentle resonance of singing bowls, your own hands, your own breath, and the willingness to pause for a moment. In a world that constantly asks us to do more, perhaps the most healing thing we can do is allow ourselves to simply be. And perhaps, just for today, that's enough.

Natura’s Bookshelf

If today's meditation resonated with you, I'd love to recommend The Comfort Book by Matt Haig. It's a collection of gentle reflections and reminders that encourage you to slow down, breathe and find comfort in life's quieter moments—much like sitting peacefully beside a crackling fire.

It's a book I genuinely enjoy and one I think pairs beautifully with a self Reiki practice.

If you'd like to experience Reiki in a more personalised way, I also offer distance Reiki sessions from the comfort of your own home. Each session is designed to give you dedicated time to rest, reset and reconnect with yourself in a calm and supportive space.

Until then, I hope this campfire meditation brings you a little more peace, one quiet breath at a time.
